FAQ

This section contains information regarding the initial setup and menu interaction with the application.

Once the application is installed, the first step is to register for the Alerts service. To do this, please type in your registered BusinessWeek Online User name and Password. Your BusinessWeek Online User name and Password are case sensitive, so please enter this information with that in mind.

Logging In

Enter your BusinessWeek Online User name and Password (these are case-sensitive) and click on the Connect button. If your Internet connection uses a proxy that requires authentication (typical in most corporations), check the box and fill in the information under Proxy Settings.

If you do not have a BusinessWeek Online account or forget your ID/password, click on the I Don't Have an Account button. A new browser window, which contains information about creating or recalling your account, will be displayed.

If your attempt to Connect fails, you'll receive an error indicating your user name or password is not correct.

If this happens -- after reattempting your log in again being mindful of case sensitivity and password -- select the I Don't Have an Account button, which will bring up the BusinessWeek Online Alerts account registration Web page for you to retrieve your lost user name or password.

Another possible failure at login occurs if your application client cannot connect with the server for some reason. This is typically caused by either a temporary loss of your Internet connection or your personal firewall software is not allowing communication between the client and server.

After verifying your Internet connection and/or personal firewall rules, please attempt to log in again in a few minutes.

Proxy Servers

Some networks (LANs) or Internet service providers (ISPs) employ proxy servers when connecting to the Internet. This is very typical in a corporate network setting. Proxy servers ensure all inbound/outbound Internet traffic go through one or more particular set of machines.

Common proxy server configurations will be automatically identified and set up by the client application. If your Internet connection relies on a proxy authentication server, however, you'll need to specify your Proxy User account name and Password after checking the Use proxy authentication checkbox under Proxy Settings. These are typically the ones you use to access the Internet from your corporate environment. Then click Connect again to gain access to the Alerts server.

If you attempt to launch the client without the necessary proxy authentication values, you will likely get the following error.

Another possible failure at login occurs if your application client cannot connect with the server for some reason. This can be caused by a number of things, including wrong authenticated proxy server settings, a temporary loss to your Internet connection, or your personal firewall software not allowing communication between the client and server.

After verifying your proxy User name / password pair is correct, your Internet connection and personal firewall rules, if you continue to experience this error, please reattempt to log in again in a few minutes.

Other icon locations -- unless suppressed during the install -- will include either the Start Menu or computer Desktop (shortcut).

If none of these methods work, contact Alerts@BusinessWeek.com for further assistance.

Once Connected

Once logged in and connected, the application will be displayed and a "Welcome" alert will be received.

Clicking on the alert headline, "WELCOME! Click on this text to display this popup" will display the following popup alert window containing basic information regarding the application client and associated Desktop FAQ information.

Also shown once logged in and connected will be the system tray icon located in the system tray region (lower right) on the taskbar of your desktop.

Clicking on the application icon will bring up the main application window. Right-clicking on the system tray icon will bring up a simple menu associated with the client which is discussed in the Application Menu section.

The application icon also reflects various states for ease of recognition in determining whether the client is connected, disconnected; whether or not sound and/or popups are disabled (denoted via tooltip popups); or, if you have any pending unseen alerts.
